Forgotten TV Treasure to be Recycled is Returned to its Rightful Owner
(GEEP Barrie Facility and Cash Found)
February 15, 2017 – GEEP is pleased to announce that Barrie Police Investigative Services have returned a forgotten treasure left inside an old TV, recycled at GEEP’s Barrie facility, to its rightful owner.
As reported by Barrie Today, Barrie Police Investigative Services have spent the past month trying to trace back and return the found treasure to its owner.
On January 13th of this year, an old television was dismantled at our GEEP Barrie facility, located at 220 John Street, when an employee found a cash box inside the TV with over $100,000 cash and some personal banking records, dating back over 30 years ago, to 1985.
The GEEP employee reported and handed over the items to the General Manager and police were involved to handle the matter accordingly.
GEEP commends the honest actions of our employees and staff and are happy to hear the money has been returned to its original owner.

During the month of April, GEEP will be co-hosting various e-waste collection events across North America. Many are open to the public and require no drop off fees. We encourage everyone to bring their old, broken or unwanted electronics to these events. GEEP will ensure all items are responsibly and securely recycled. Together we can manage the consequences of the electronic age, through sustainable and environmentally responsible recycling.
Follow GEEP via Twitter, Facebook or Instagram to see if any events are being held in your local area. Search the hashtag, #GoGreenWithGEEP or #TogetherWeCanMakeADifference for updates and photos.
If you do connect with us at one of our collection events, you may receive a GREEN ‘thank-you’ in return: a GEEP seed pack or GEEP seed pen! Both items are embedded with seeds and are biodegradable. When planted in a pot of soil, the seeds will grow, while the rest will compost away, leaving behind beautiful flowers or even a pine tree! Some events also feature a draw for a new electronic device. To be entered, you must drop off an acceptable e-waste item.
Celebrate with GEEP this Earth Day – HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE! These events will be easy to spot with our new a-frame signs!
The countdown to Earth Day is on! On Friday April 22, 2016 the world will celebrate an international day of environmental action. GEEP will be participating in
many events around North America celebrating with individuals, companies and governments on how we can work together to protect our beautiful planet. Follow GEEP via Twitter, Facebook or Instagram to learn more about these upcoming events and how you can participate! Search the hashtag, #GoGreenWithGEEP.
If you do connect with us at one of these events, you might receive one of our “Grow a Better Tomorrow” seed paper packs. We encourage you to get a pot, plant these adorable seed paper shapes and watch the wildflowers grow! It’s a fun activity to do with children, grandchildren, or in your office to brighten up a space with the colours of spring!
Plantable paper is a biodegradable eco-paper that is made with post-consumer materials (no trees harmed for this paper!) and embedded with seeds. When the paper is planted in a pot of soil, the seeds grow and the paper composts away. All that is left behind is flowers. It’s easy to plant and grow. We purchased the promotional item from Botanical PaperWorks who are both the manufacturer of plantable paper and the designer and printer of many other plantable paper products.
WATCH A GREAT VIDEO PUT TOGETHER FROM BOTANICAL PAPERWORKS, EXPLAINING HOW TO GROW YOUR FLOWERS:
HERE ARE DIRECTIONS FOR GROWING A BETTER TOMORROW*
- a pot for planting
- some good potting soil
- plantable paper
- a sunny corner
STEP 1 – PREPARE YOUR POT
Fill your pot 2/3 full with good potting soil. Tamp down the soil and add more if necessary. You want the pot to be firmly full, but not packed. The paper can be planted indoors or outside, so you get to choose according to the temperature and conditions at the time of planting (we don’t recommend planting outside if it’s blizzarding or desert-hot!).
STEP 2 – PLANT THE PAPER
Take your plantable paper and cover the soil in the prepared pot with the paper. It’s okay if the paper overlaps. Spread a 1/8 to 1/4 inch layer of soil over the plantable paper pieces and tamp down gently.
STEP 3 – WATER DURING GERMINATION
After planting the paper in your pot, give it a good soak. You want the paper and the soil to be nicely damp but not swimming in water. During the first 10 days, keep the paper moist at all times. The water is necessary for germination.
STEP 4 – CARE AFTER GERMINATION
Once sprouts appear, continue to keep the paper moist but be careful not to over water. Once sturdy plants appear, water as needed. Here’s what the pot looks like after planting a greeting card: *Thanks to Botanical paperworks for these great directions! www.botanicalpaperworks.com
